How to make Sausage Gravy
Step 1
In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the sausage while using a spoon to break it up into small pieces until it is well browned, which should take around 10 minutes.
Step 2
Lower the heat and add the cream, water, and xanthan gum to the mixture. Keep stirring frequently while cooking for about 10 minutes until the gravy thickens. If the gravy becomes too thick, use water to thin it out until it reaches the desired consistency. Add water one tablespoon at a time until you achieve the desired thickness.
Step 3
Season the gravy to taste with salt and pepper. The gravy is best served immediately.
Low Carb Sausage Gravy is delicious served over Southern Keto Biscuits or scrambled eggs. Another favorite in the South is tomatoes covered in gravy!
Storage and Reheating
Storage – Allow the gravy to cool completely before transferring it to an airtight container. You can store it in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days.
Reheating – To reheat, gently warm the gravy in a saucepan over low to medium heat, stirring occasionally. You might need to add a splash of water to regain the desired consistency, as it can thicken when refrigerated.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many carbs are in keto sausage gravy?
Southern Keto Sausage Gravy has 1.4 net carbs per 1/2 cup serving.
How do you thicken gravy on a low-carb diet?
If you are following a keto or low-carb diet and want to thicken your gravy, you can use xanthan gum instead of traditional thickeners like flour or cornstarch. Simply sprinkle a small amount of xanthan gum into the gravy while whisking continuously until it reaches the desired thickness. Be careful not to add too much, as this can cause a gel-like texture.
