Why you’ll love Keto Oreo Dirt Cake

Have you ever heard of Keto Oreo Dirt Cake? It’s a delicious dessert made of layers of chocolate mousse, cream cheese and crunchy Oreo inspired “dirt.” Dirt cake with regular Oreos was one of my favorite desserts when I was a kid.  I’ve always loved anything with Oreos in it!  But, it took a while to replicate this dessert because I could never get the authentic Oreo flavor I was looking for.. until now. Black dutch processed cocoa powder is what gives Oreos their distinct flavor.  You can use regular cocoa powder, but it will not taste the same!  My low-carb version of dirt cake is a hit with everyone who tries it!

Ingredients & Substitutions

Cookie Crumbs – The cookie crumbs are the star of this dessert. You can use extra cookie crumbs as a topping for low-carb ice cream and other desserts!

  • Finely ground almond flour
  • Granular sweetener
  • Black dutch processed cocoa powder
  • Melted butter
  • Salt
  • Vanilla extract

Chocolate Mousse – an alternative would be a batch of sugar-free pudding. I recommend using one that is made with stevia.

  • Cold water
  • Beef gelatin powder – acts as a natural thickening agent, perfect for making low-carb mousse.
  • Very hot water
  • Heavy whipping cream
  • Granular sweetener
  • Cocoa powder – use regular cocoa powder for the mousse

Whipped Cream – You can use store-bought canned whipped cream, but it won’t hold its shape as well as homemade.

  • Heavy whipping cream
  • Confectioners sweetener
  • Vanilla extract

How to make Keto Dirt Cake

Cookie Crumbs

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Line a sheet pan with parchment paper. Put all of the ingredients in a separate bowl. Use a fork to stir them together until well combined. The mixture will be wet and crumbly like dirt.

Spread the cookie crumbles evenly onto a sheet pan. Bake the fine crumbs for 15 minutes. The low-carb cookie crumbs will look wet and still be soft. Allow to cool completely. Break up the mixture into small crumbles. (It’s less messy to leave them on the parchment paper and fold in the paper with your hands to crush the cookie crumbs.)

Chocolate Mousse

Put water in a small bowl and sprinkle the gelatin over it. Let stand for 1 minute to soften. Add the hot water, Stirring until the pudding mixture is completely dissolved.

Use a large mixing bowl with a hand mixer or a stand mixer fitted with a whisk attachment. Whip the cream and sweetener on medium speed until soft peaks start to form. Scrape down the sides of the large bowl to get all of the cream cheese mixture. Continue mixing; slowly add the cocoa powder. Mix until all the ingredients are well combined. Pour in the gelatin mixture and mix until the mousse is smooth.

Easy Homemade Whipped Cream

While you can use sugar-free whipped cream in most desserts, there’s just something about making homemade whipped cream that elevates your favorite desserts. To make it, you’ll use a large mixing bowl with a hand mixer or a stand mixer fitted with a whisk attachment. On medium speed, blend cream with sweetener and vanilla until stiff peaks form.  You can also use a whipped cream dispenser to make excellent homemade whipped cream. It comes with different attachments and makes decorating fun.

Layer the cake

Use a large trifle bowl or other clear serving bowl to layer the ingredients. Spread one third of the cookie crumbs in the bottom of the bowl. Next, evenly spread half of the chocolate mousse over the cookies followed by half of the whipped cream. Repeat with another third of the cookie crumbs and the rest of the mousse and whipped cream. Sprinkle the top of the cake with the rest of the cookie crumbs. Refrigerate for at least 8 hours overnight before serving.

  1. I tried this and it ended up being delicious! Had a small family cookout yesterday (less than 10 people of course ;)) and everyone loved it – even the kids! It did take me two tries to get the mousse right. The first time I put the gelatin in and it was already too congealed and turned out very clumpy. I also thought I was supposed to use the dutched cocoa powder and it turned out grey and ugly. The second time I made the gelatin AFTER the mousse mixture, and used regular cocoa powder. It turned out perfect. I also have a lot of the Oreo crumbs left to add to something else or just eat on their own. I was the only person on keto at the cookout and the dessert was gone by the end of the night!
